What are you avoiding?

What we like to do we give preference and do it immediately, while we ignore what we dislike doing and postpone doing that activity. But as a leader, can one afford to do this in an organisation?

Right now, what happens is reactive leadership.
Issues that comes to you, you are giving attention to it.
If it does not come to you, you are not giving attention to it.

Okay his question is – basically that there are things which I like where there is no motivation issues  I am able to do it, there are things that I don’t  like. I tend to postpone. So what do I do about it?

Now, this is an employee mentality, this is not entrepreneurship mentality. You cannot become an entrepreneur and say ‘Some core areas of my business I don’t feel like concentrating’. How you will not concentrate? As an entrepreneur if you don’t concentrate on that, then your entire business will not develop because like how they say, … something like …, the weakest link is the strength of the chain or something … some proverb is there know…

The weakest department in your organisation is the speed breaker I am talking about. Doesn’t matter what is good in your organisation, the departments that are weak is going to slow down your entire organisation. In fact, if I am an entrepreneur I… and we all have unfortunately as an entrepreneur we all have type of challenges we like to deal with, type of challenges we try to avoid.

For some of you any financial issue in the organisation because you cannot understand numbers and your accountant can make you look incompetent. You try to avoid – don’t bring all this to me. If don’t look at it after some time you will have to settle down in America or London… okay. All those guys who went and settled there, it’s because they did not focus on the core issues of the business, so as an entrepreneur I do not have a choice.

This is like working on health and telling there is this this…  Ahmm there are muscles in the body which are cosmetic muscles. See your biceps are well developed, the triceps there, shoulders where you can wear sleeveless and show it to the world and they will see it. Or you can wear short sleeves and do a tattoo there and they will see.

Suppose you are very good quads, you cannot come in underwear and show it to everybody, you still have to cover it. So, there is no cosmetic value to your leg muscles but there’s cosmetic value to your… so lot of these people when they go to the gym they want to prefer to work on these muscles because this has cosmetic value and they don’t focus on these. Nobody wants to work on that lower back, permanent problem back problem.

Nobody wants to, some of them also sitting here, they are going on checking, only one question left Mahatria that when will it end – ahaaaaa – back is not working. First one hour looks very exciting, right now back is not working. In fact some of you, you do not know from where I am sitting and what all positions people are sitting. Some of them are on the verge of becoming Srirangam Ranganathar. In fact they feel, this might be the most comfortable position to listen to because all other position have tried and it’s not working right now for a lot of them. So Vadivelu in one movie – come and stand in front of the police station and he is actually nervous. So his legs will be trembling but his face will look very very… so camera will show only on the face, the face is looking absolutely strong. Then the policeman will notice his legs and all are shivering, so immediately the policeman will say ‘How come you look so courageous on the face but your legs are shaking?’ So Vadivelu will say, ‘Building strong, basement weak’ okay. So lot of these people, their health regimen is – building strong, basement weak. Now if you will not concentrate on that, you will not be fit, you cannot be fit.

Same is the case with organisation, my weakest department will slow me down. In fact every major issue that you face in business today are the issues that you chose to ignore, because overnight you don’t become minus eleven thousand five hundred crores. Overnight you don’t become minus three thousand five hundred crores. Cannot happen, there is no way. The issue grows from 10 crores to 20 crores, 20 crores to 30 crores, 30 crores to 42 crores, the issue… and you overlooking it and you are overlooking it, you are overlooking it, you are overlooking it, you are overlooking it till it becomes so big that you cannot mange it anymore. And only reason is you are focusing on preferential issues and avoiding the core issue that needed concentration.

That’s not an entrepreneurship thinking. An entrepreneur has no less favorable child. Every child is important for an entrepreneur. Every department needs his attention. If it doesn’t, then you look back and explain why you have not grown as much you should have grown so unless there is… So you have to face this issue. How do I do that… proactive leadership.

How many departments are there in an organisation that needs focus? Divide it across your six days.   Take paper and pen, define the various departments that exist in the organisation and ask yourself, is all the departments are getting my leadership time? It has to have its leadership time and when I say I am not saying you have to go into day to day., Just for review, just to check accountability. Just to take commitments from them, just to do performance monitoring, just to let them know mediocrity is not accepted, just to let them know lack of excellence is not accepted and this is not agreeable to me. So somewhere there has to be that attention. If you, in your leadership if the 360 degree of the organisation is not getting your attention, that which is not getting your attention will become an issue.

We all went to Tirunelveli and to for some other reason. So we went and met a 103 year old man, he is no more but at that stage he was 99, he lived up to 103 and then he left. So he was 99, so we were all sitting there and so I just asked him, so what is your secret to health?  I think whatever he said is the answer to advanced organisational leadership.

Essentially the old man said, can’t even call him a old man. The wise man said, whatever in your body is not being moved there you will pick up an ailment. Solution is, ensure that every part of your body is moved. So keep asking yourself which part of my body have I not been moving, move it. Internally also that is the answer, externally also that is the answer.

That part of my house that I have not used for a period of time cobweb will be formed. It simply means I have not been using that part of the home. If I use it regularly there will be no cobweb. Which means from an organisation leadership, that department which is not getting my attention, issues will come that is the cobweb……. will come. If you leave it for too long, cobweb will not come, scorpion will also come.

Then you will not able to manage the entire thing. So every issue that I face in organisational growth, is nothing but I was waiting for some issue to come in certain departments for it to get… So if I can create 360 degree leadership in my perspective, where I am saying, All these departments exists and this is how I am going to schedule my time on a daily basis, weekly…. Some departments need attention daily, some require weekly,. some require once a month, some require once a quarter, but nothing will be free from my attention. People in the organisation should feel they will be questioned. That’s what creates accountability and as long as you can create that framework and ensure the entire running. Whoever you took for granted in the name of trust or loyalty, whatever you took for granted and said I will not question. Those are all the areas that will come and choke you a little later.
