How to be conscious in day-to-day life?
Because the nature of the mind is to wander.
Mind is designed to wander.
The body is supposed to be localized,
and the mind is supposed to wander.
It’s designed like that by the Creator.
In fact, if the mind does not wander we would not have had,
all the evolution of science.
If the mind did not wander, we would not have had all the discoveries and inventions.
If the mind did not…
Right from the beginning if the mind state in unison,
we wouldn’t have created anything that we have created.
So, in order to ensure that man is able to create the world that he has created,
the creator created you with a mind that was supposed to wander.
So, it’s a beautiful question.
The very nature of the mind being wandering.

Everything life positive will expand and everything life negative will shrink.
So, I really wish because everybody talks about live in the now,

If you can practice whatever I’m going to tell you right now for two years,
at least two years it will take.
You will find the answer to this question.
End of every day, starting today,
you’re going to do a simple ritual. If I ask you what is the last thing
you do before you go to sleep.
It must be using the mobile or watching TV.
Watch your TV, watch your mobile, everything…
But just before you go to sleep, I want you to switch off all these things.
You can’t do this lying down, you have to sit and do. You have to sit.
Only then you will do.
Just sit in your bed.
You don’t have to go to prayer room. You don’t have to have a meditation chair, nothing.
In your bed right there.
Even if your loved one is hugging you tell her hug me but I’m going to sit.
For five minutes I want you to do this.
In your mind, I want you to just run through your day once.
Like how an editor will run through the whole thing…
In your mind, I want you to just run through your day.
Once.
That’s all I want.

You’ll simply run through your day.
So, I decided to wake up at six o’clock in the morning. I’d set up a wakeup call,
and the wakeup call rang. I snooze and I went to sleep.
That’s all you have to do.
No, I woke up at six o’clock. It rang and I woke up. Anything is okay…
And then I brushed my teeth,
then I had coffee. It was a great coffee, but I didn’t tell my mother it was a great coffee.
I could have… It’s okay.
Just go through that.
And some of the patches in the day you won’t remember.
You will feel after that…
After that… After that what I had for breakfast?
I don’t know what I had for breakfast.
After that… Okay I was there at office. Yeah, in between I don’t know what happened. It’s ok.
Just go through… Whatever you can recall, just recall.
And just go to sleep. That’s all you have to do.
Mahatria, from this will happen.
Something extraordinary will happen.
Tomorrow morning,
the wakeup call will ring at six o’clock.
You will be about to go to sleep.
But because yesterday you self-criticized yourself for something you wanted to do
and did not do. This is not external criticism.
It is self-criticism. You said I had to get up at… but I snoozed and went off to sleep.
You will find yourself not snoozing but getting up.
Now the motivation is not from outside, the correction is not from outside.
In fact, I dare to make this sentence.
You practice this for two years.
The guru for you will not be outside of you.
You’ll find a guru within you.
You don’t have to search in the world outside, you’ll find…
that, there is an inner voice powerful enough
within you to guide you in life. You will find it within you. You don’t have to search outside.
Then I was going in the bike and somebody, one cyclist came in between.
I scolded him with bad words.
Interestingly, you will find all these learnings will come.
Right now what is happening to all of us is…
Our learning is completely in a different track.
Our living is in a separate track, they’re running parallel.
So, every time after the incident you realize, I need not have been angry.
After the incident you realize, I need not have been so abusive.
After the incident you realize, in the sway of emotions my intelligence did not work.
After the incident… you realized, that I did not earn my dinner.
After the incident…
So, we are always realizing…
Very natural.
Simply at the end of everyday, just go through this. That’s all…
The first change that will come is…
You will start self-criticizing yourself for what you should have done, but you did not do.
It’s not coming from outside… So, there is no ego involved in this.
Just continue to practice this.
There are days you will forget this itself,
you won’t practice at the end of the day… you will go off to sleep.
Something beautiful will happen.
Practice this for three days.
Fourth today you forgot, you went off to sleep.
You will wake up around 1:30am realizing,
I did not practice this at the end of the day.
Something very beautiful is happening…
You are awakening the awareness within you.
The awareness within you, that I should have done, I did not do.
You’re awakening the awareness within you.
And there’s only one way to awaken the awareness within you –
by practicing introspection at the end of every day.
Something very beautiful will happen. After a few days…
You will not only self-criticize yourself, you will start self-appreciating yourself.
Something very beautiful will happen.
So, morning the wake up… I’m going on with the same example I will go through the day.
Morning…
I set up a wakeup call and I woke up. You will smile at the end of the day.
A small smile. This is self-appreciation.
You’re, in fact…
The more and more you grow in self-appreciation,
the less and less you’ll crave for appreciation from the world outside.
Continue, something beautiful will happen…
One month from now you practice this…
And you’re there in the car, and there is a cyclist who intruded.
You started scolding him with bad words…
And something inside tells you, end of the day…
You will halfway through the action catch yourself.
You are awakening the awareness within you.
For a few minutes, don’t take your eyes,
off me.
What I’m going to tell you is very very profound, and it’s visual.
There are people,
who do not correct themselves for an entire lifetime.
Because they don’t have the awareness. In an entire lifetime,
they never correct themselves.
The Duryodhana…
I know what is right, but I cannot indulge in it.
I know what is wrong, but I cannot avoid it. In an entire lifetime they won’t correct themselves.
There are people like that.
I’m sure you guys don’t belong to that category.
There are people like this where,
they take years to realize something…
Years of depression then they come out,
or years of hurt, then they come out.
Or years of wanting to take revenge they come out, or years they take to
reconcile to the fact yeah, I failed.
But my life has moved on.
Yeah, I lost that relationship, but my life has moved on. They take years to do it.
Hopefully there must be only one or two here.
There’s another category.
Can you see…
This is the worst…
In a whole lifetime they don’t realize.
Then there is a category.
After several years, decades, they realize this…
One or two of you must be there.
There’s another one….
Keep watching. I want you to know where you want to be.
It’s not that…
There are people, where months later they realize this.
Something would have happened in March and in November…
either while reading a book or watching a movie…
Something else… and they realize and they get their realignment.
Most of you must be like this.
In days you will realize this…
Something would have happened,
on Thursday.
And by Sunday you’re either,
hitting yourself on the back or you’re smiling and saying, how stupid.
You’re getting back your realignment.
Not in a lifetime.
Not in years, not in months.
And here many of you are there. It happens in matter of days.
In some of the areas where you wanted to improve, where you wanted to improve…
Some of you would have gone through this all ready.
It’s happening within the day in matter of hours.
Within the day it must be happening in a matter of hours,
you did something at 9 o’clock,
by 12 o’clock you realized why did I take this decision when I was emotional.
Why did I have such deep negative emotions…
you are already realizing in matter of hours.
Now listen carefully.
What is this sequence we are talking in terms of…
from when it happens, some people never become aware in a lifetime.
From when it happens, some people become aware of it…
in years together.
From when it happened,
some people become aware of it,
in months.
From when it happens,
some people become aware of it in days.
From when it happens, some people become aware of it in a few hours’ time.
Which means…
From when I go through an experience,
me becoming aware of it,
this gap has to keep coming down.
This is growing in consciousness; it has to keep coming down.
How do I accelerate this?
End of every day,
you’re trying to exercise your awareness.
Like how I exercise my muscles,
how I exercise my breath,
how I exercise my intelligence,
how I exercise certain skills,
how I exercise my programming capabilities.
I’m giving you an exercise to exercise your awareness.
End of every day,
you’re trying to become aware of what all you went through in the day,
you’re exercising your awareness.

Now let’s erase all this.
I don’t want any one of you to be this.
By doing this, at the end of every day, something very beautiful will happen.
Immediately after the event, you will become aware by doing this…
Progressively by practicing this…

Immediately after the incident you’ve become aware.
Continue to practice this.
Now the gap has come down, after the incident you are becoming aware.
Continue to practice this at the end of everyday, exercise you awareness.
A very beautiful moment will come in your life.
During the action you will become aware.
See this is the last…

I’m giving anger as an example, it can happen with anything.
It can happen with anything.
You’re just…
I… I don’t think I should have failed…
Hey deep negative emotions…
I’ll bounce back…
I have resilience…
I will execute a counter choice…
During the action you’ll become aware.
Continue to practice this at the end of every day…
Something very beautiful will happen…
It will never become an action, you will catch it as an emotion itself.
Inside itself you will catch it. It will never become an action you will correct it.
Continue to practice it…
And you will reach a stage where,
awareness will become present continuous…
Awareness in the present continuous is consciousness.
Consciousness with an element of past is awareness.
Awareness in the present continuous is consciousness.
This is important, don’t take your eyes off me.
Don’t take your eyes off me…
Whether you will take a lifetime,
years,
months,
days,
hours,
immediately after the incident,
during the incident,
at the level of thoughts and feelings itself.
Or you will not even allow the spark of negativity to come,
is the progress that you will have to achieve.
Buddha…
is in that final stage –
in the present continuous…
In fact between you and Buddha there is only a gap of few minutes.
After the incident you are becoming aware, during the incident Buddha is becoming aware.
There’s only a gap a few minutes.
Of course, to break…
breach this gap of few minutes.
It takes a lifetime.
But the only way to achieve that is,
your awareness has to be exercised.
This is the entire explanation.
All I’m telling you is, end of every day…
try to recall your entire day.
You don’t have to punish yourself. You don’t have to do anything.
Just recall your entire day.
In one week, you will see a difference.
In one week,
the level of awareness with which you live will change.
In 21 days you will find, you’re almost catching yourself every time,
either self-appreciating yourself,
or self-criticizing yourself, immediately after the incident.
In six months time you will find,
most of the time during the action itself there is awareness.
When eventually…
there is no element of past in awareness, it becomes present continuous.
You’ve become conscious of…
And that is how you live your consciousness in day to day life.
Any purpose, any wish, any desire in an agitated mind… it just gets lost in the remaining crowd of thoughts. If only you will learn how to quieten this mind…
And in a quiet and mind – a mere wish is a command to the universe!
How advanced is this! Now we close our eyes, and we know we are getting thoughts… Earlier used to live like a stranger. Thinking used to keep happening, you used to keep scratching… Now for the first time we realize – thoughts ellam varuthu… Aye, namba mande kulla masala (we are getting thoughts… we have stuff…) it’s a revelation! Okay, for the first time you all realize Upper kuch kam karraha hey (Some work is happening in the head). Till now, idhar se kam horahatha… idhar se kam horahatha… (work was happening here…) Now suddenly we realize… Oh, upper hemisphere also something is happening… Right now, you’re at least becoming aware of your thoughts. It will come in… yours is a scientific mind.
Ippadi ukathundu erukkayey yethavathu nadakuthu? (You are sitting like this… is something happening?)
Is something happening to you? Just because that fellow told, ok, you’re sitting… but actually what do you think it’s happening? Coffee readynu nenaikiran (I think coffee is ready!). If now itself she has done coffee, would it become cold by the time I have? Mahatria, told – you should always have small beginning only in life – for today so much is enough! Coffee! You will go…
Okay. Everybody will have to go through… everybody will go through… The reason Buddha was not able to experience silence is… He went… he wanted to embrace silence with a question in his mind. ‘How to remove the suffering in the world?’ And because you closed your eyes with a question in mind, the mind will not quieten and it’ll either give you a counter questions or thoughts… It will! In fact, rather than thinking, meditation is not happening to me – at least understand… now there is a focus to your thinking. Your mind is thinking in the direction of your questions. At least it’s moved from many to a focus… which itself is progress. Somewhere at some stage and this cannot be done by this. That’s why meditation is happening! You cannot do it… Somewhere at some stage in life… You don’t know when, how… you simply drop the questions. You just drop. Not because you have answers to all the questions, but you realize every question again becomes a question. Every answer… right now you asked me two questions. I have given you answer because it’s infinipath, they look for the next question and continue… if it’s not an infinipath – only two of us were there in the car, after answering your two questions you will sit or in that you’ll ask me two more questions? You will have two more questions – in that you will ask – because… we are all like that children, where even after the story is over, the child will ask… then what happened?
You can’t stop the questions… but over a period of time on practicing not doing… like it happens for many of you in the fourth, or the fifth or the sixth day, in HDB, or sometimes the fifth or the sixth HDB… Suddenly, for once, come there saying that – I’m not coming here for realization, and I just come here for experiences. As long as, I’m repeating, even if you are a Siddhartha, with a question in mind, when you close your eyes, you will only have thoughts. When you drop that question and close your eyes, then you have an experience.
At some stage, you will say, <span style=color:red;>Mahatria</span> today, I do not want to listen to you, I just want to watch you in silence. At some stage, you will not want to hear me, you will just want to experience me. We don’t know when that happens. That doesn’t mean your thinking is wrong. That doesn’t mean your questioning is wrong because there is no materialistic progress without questions.
That’s the nature of the mind and that has led you to that progress. Don’t see that as something that is wrong. Then why is spirituality asking us not to think! why is spirituality… because in a turbulent Pacific Ocean, even if a take the Petronas Towers, twin building, and throw it, you will not notice the ripples… because it’s already so turbulent, you won’t even notice it. In a still water lake, if somewhere even a speck of dust that’s flying in the wind comes and deposits itself on the still water Lake, it’ll create ripples that will fill the entire lake.
So these advanced scientists realized, right now you’re planting all your desires in an agitated mind. It’s getting lost in the crowd of thoughts, it’s losing its potency. The more and more you learn to quieten your mind and in that quietened mind, you plant that purpose in your life. The futuristic direction in your life, the sort of potency it gains, whether its a spiritual direction or a materialistic direction, is phenomenal. So they’re asking you to quieten the mind. So as long as you’re quietening the mind itself, you’re already in the right direction. You may not have yet stopped the mind. But <span style=color:red;>Mahatria</span>, how do I know I’m quietening the mind? The fact that you’re aware of your thoughts, your mind is quiet. Because otherwise you won’t even be aware of your thoughts.
